About Rahman Barry, MD
Double Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in Cary and Raleigh, North Carolina
“Early in my residency, I had a patient say, “You have no idea how much you’ve changed the way I feel about myself every morning.” I still remember that moment many years ago confirming my passion for the field. Whether it’s refining facial contours, enhancing body aesthetics, or performing breast surgery, the combination of artistry and precision in plastic surgery is incredibly rewarding. It allows me to restore form and function while helping patients regain confidence, empowering them to feel more comfortable in their own skin.”
Early Years
Dr. Rahman Barry was born in Kingston, Jamaica, to two devoted parents, both of whom were business owners in the international travel and tourism industry. This upbringing afforded him the rare privilege of traveling the world from a young age, fostering a deep passion for adventure and a genuine appreciation for diverse cultures. While enjoying a vibrant childhood on the picturesque island of Jamaica, Dr. Barry discovered a passion for martial arts, eventually earning a black belt in Kung Fu. Initially, his aspirations were to follow in his parents’ entrepreneurial footsteps, however, during his teenage years, after observing his parents’ inspiring career transitions, he felt a calling to pursue a different path. Inspired by their resilience and adaptability, Dr. Barry chose to embark on a career in medicine. His mother, who had since earned her Ph.D. and become a theologian, worked tirelessly to support his academic pursuits, ensuring he was well-prepared for this significant shift in direction. With his mother’s unwavering support and his own academic dedication, Dr. Barry was accepted into the esteemed University of the West Indies (UWI) Medical School at the remarkable age of 18.
Postgraduate Education
Upon graduating from medical school in 2011, Dr. Barry sought to further his surgical training in the United States—an especially challenging endeavor for international graduates. His perseverance and stellar academic record secured him a highly competitive surgical internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. While adapting to life far from the warmth of Jamaica’s tropical climate, Dr. Barry thrived, receiving an award for outstanding performance and scoring in the 99th percentile on the national surgery in-training board exam.
Following his internship, he pursued his general surgery residency at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Throughout his residency, he continued to excel academically, consistently scoring in the top 5% nationally and gaining membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor medical society. In 2019, he earned board certification from the American Board of Surgery (ABS).
During his surgical training, Dr. Barry found his true calling in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He channeled his academic focus and research efforts into the specialty, paving the way for his acceptance into a highly coveted three-year fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Vanderbilt University. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Barry became board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, achieving the distinction of becoming a double board-certified plastic surgeon.
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Career
During his fellowship at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Barry honed his skills under the mentorship of leading plastic surgeons in both academic and private practice settings. Recognized for his technical precision and calm, composed demeanor in the operating room, he quickly developed a reputation for delivering exceptional results.
Upon completing his fellowship, Dr. Barry returned to Marshall University as academic faculty assistant professor of surgery, joining their Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery group. His practice flourished, driven by word-of-mouth referrals from grateful patients who appreciated his ability to combine innovative techniques with consistent, aesthetically pleasing outcomes. During this time, he became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and continued to mentor future plastic surgeons, supporting their research and professional development. Dr. Barry’s contributions to the field also included securing research grants and publishing multiple papers in the field of cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Barry met his wife, Marisa, during his general surgery residency, a serendipitous encounter with the then-PA student that blossomed into a lifelong partnership. Over the past ten years, they have built a fulfilling life together, balancing demanding medical careers with raising their two young sons, Theodore and Oliver. Much like his own childhood experiences, Dr. Barry shares his love of adventure and travel with his family. Outside the operating room, he enjoys practicing martial arts and looks forward to dusting off his golf clubs to get back on the course.
Tell us about your family.
My family is my anchor. I met my wife, Marisa, during my general surgery residency, and over the past decade, we’ve built a beautiful life together. We have two sons, Theodore, who is 2, and Oliver, who is 1, and they keep us busy! We love spending time together as a family, traveling, and sharing our sense of adventure with the boys. Outside of work, I also enjoy practicing martial arts and am looking forward to getting back into golf. Our family’s journey is constantly evolving, and I’m grateful for every moment we share.
Q&A With Dr. Barry
What is your favorite surgery to perform?
One of my favorite surgeries to perform is cosmetic breast surgery, whether it’s breast augmentation, lift, or revision. These procedures can have a profound impact on a patient’s body confidence and overall self-image. I also greatly enjoy facial rejuvenation surgeries, such as face and neck lifts, as well as body contouring procedures like tummy tucks. When combined, such as in a mommy makeover, these surgeries allow for comprehensive transformations that help patients look and feel their best. The ability to tailor each surgery to achieve balanced, natural results is what makes this work so fulfilling.
What brought you to the RDU area?
The move to the Triangle region was a thoughtful family decision. My wife and I were looking for a community that offered excellent professional opportunities and an ideal environment to raise our two young sons. The Triangle stood out for its high quality of life, strong educational options, and welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, the chance to join Wake Plastic Surgery, where I could expand my practice while continuing to deliver outstanding care to patients, made the decision even more compelling.
